Fashion lovers are grabbing designer bargains at York’s newest store, reports MAXINE GORDON

FORGET The X Factor – it seems canny fashionistas would rather have the TK Maxx factor. Hundreds of shoppers queued round the block when the fashion retailer, which sells designer labels at knock-down prices, opened its latest store in York this week.

TK Maxx Woman, in the former Boots store on Coney Street, sells fashion, shoes, lingerie and accessories exclusively for the fairer sex. It is a companion store to the TK Maxx outlet at Monks Cross.

Savvy shoppers are probably familiar with the TK Maxx model, where designer and high street labels are sold with discounts of up to 60 per cent off the recommended retail price (rrp).

With up to 10,000 new items coming into store every week – customers are lured back regularly to search out the best gems in the latest arrivals.

And hunt is the appropriate word. There is a lot of fun to be had shopping at TK Maxx, not least in the unearthing of a designer must-have that is a fraction of the original price. And then there’s the element of good fortune – hoping that the one-off you’ve just found is in your size.

There are plenty of top names at the new store. The York shop is one of only 22 in the UK to host the Gold Label collection, featuring couture labels.

The new women’s-wear store is a veritable one-stop shop, selling everything from undies and nightwear to clothing, bags, boots and shoes, as well as sunglasses.

There is a great selection of smart wear, perfect if you want to sharpen up your look for work.

Suits and fitted dresses oozing ladylike elegance continue to be trends for autumn/winter – with a nod to Sixties styling from the hit TV show Mad Men (which returns to our screens on Wednesday for its fourth series).

So taking inspiration from Mad Men’s leading ladies, we rifled the rails at TK Maxx Woman and found a selection of outfits perfect for a girl about town.
