Wear it swell

CONGRATULATIONS: you’ll soon be hearing the patter of tiny feet, which calls for one thing – shopping (well a glass of champers is probably on ice for now).

Pregnancy and parenthood can prove expensive, what with everything from babygrows to buggies to buy. It can all put mum-to-be’s fashion budget under a tight squeeze. Few women want to spend a fortune on maternity gear, not least because they only wear it for a few months.

So it’s good news that Matalan has joined the list of big-named retailers now offering a pregnancy wear range.

With its keen prices and eye on fashion, Matalan’s new collection – launched this month – looks set to be a win-win for women wanting to look good throughout their pregnancy.

The debut range features easy-to-wear and flattering dresses (from £14) as well as bright, summery tops (£14) and indigo drainpipes (£18) with soft, elasticated side panels to keep you comfy while staying on-trend.

For a more casual look, check out the distressed denims (£18) with an over-the-bump waist to keep you and your baby feeling secure and stylish.

Dorothy Perkins in leading from the front on the high street with its maternity ranges for SS10; it’s floral puff-sleeve dress (£25) and black and white stripe tunic (£16) are perfect for fashionistas in the family way.

Mothercare also has some impressive fashion-forward collections, including a stylish khaki jumpsuit (£40) which would be perfect for those summer nights.

Cast an eye over Blooming Marvellous too; what’s not to love about the busy floral dress (£32), which would see you through from spring to summer in style.

Mamas & Papas is another source of stylish looks for yummy mummys-to-be.

It has hired TV stylist Nicky Hambleton-Jones to give advice on how to look fashionable rather than frumpy over the coming months. Read her tips below...

Nicky’s top tips:

*Love your lingerie. When your body starts to change, add a maternity bra to your shopping list. Choose a matching set.

*Pick pieces that fit. Don’t fall for the trick of buying oversize, baggy styles.

*Do denim. The perfect pair is hard to find, but Mamas & Papas has over and under the bump fits plus three different leg lengths.

*Shape still matters. Figure-hugging outfits can five you a smooth, sophisticated silhouette.

Here are her must-haves in a maternity wardrobe:

*A belted cardi
*Jersey tunic
*White shirt
*Skinny jeans
*Bright-coloured top
*Comfy hooded top
*Eye catching necklace

As a local paper can Maxine Gorden not add local shops to the list of those that supply maternity wear?

If promoting maternity wear on a budget why not try Get Your Frocks Off, Goodrangate for 2nd hand maternity wear or Expecting, Gillygate for hire? - and no, I don't work for either of these shops I just like supporting local trade. Matalan and the like have big enough marketing budgets to put this kind of editorial together themselves.
