THERE’S something about winter that makes it a great time for photographers. Not always, of course. Those grey, dreary, bitter days when the air is filled with a chilling spray of rain pose a challenge to even the finest photographer.

But at other times there’s a wonderful pictorial quality about the season. Early mornings when the clear, hard sunlight of January strikes low across the landscape, throwing every leaf-blade into sharp relief; evenings when the bare branches of trees are outlined against a sky turned blood-red by the setting sun; familiar landscapes clothed in an unfamiliar drape of snow; trees and branches rimed in frost - all these give a new look and feel to the world.

So we knew when we set #winter as the theme of the January competition for members of The Press Camera Club that we’d get some great entries. Club members haven’t disappointed. We’ve chosen just a few entries to show off on these pages. There are plenty more to feast your eyes on at the club’s page on Facebook. And if you fancy having a go yourself - and potentially seeing some of your own work in print in The Press - you can sign up there.

Happy snapping!
