TAKE a photograph that captures the essence of Christmas. That was the challenge for Press Camera Club members in the December competition.

As usual, club members rose to the challenge, with a wonderful selection of photographs posted on the club’s Facebook page. The high standard and sheer variety of images posed a headache for Press photographer Frank Dwyer when choosing the winners. But after much deliberation, the eight photographs featured on these pages today were his pick of the bunch.

And his overall winner? Medel Domingo, for his photograph of St Helen’s Square during a snowstorm. “It’s just such a wonderfully traditional Christmas image,” Frank said. “But the lighting is also really nice - and the fact that this is such a special York scene gives it that something extra.”

Runners up were Sue Butler for her street scene lit by orange lamplight, and Brian Moore for his winter moorland scene, set off by the bright red splash of a remote postbox. “It’s a fantastic composition,” Frank said.

Congratulations to Medel, who will receive £50 and a canvas print of his winning photo. This month’s competition, meanwhile, is... Winter. Get snapping, everyone.
