MAXINE GORDON looks at how to wear the colour of 2018 – Pantone's Ultra Violet

WE are awaiting many big announcements... the outcome of the Brexit negotiations and the winner of Strictly, to name but two.

But fashionistas at least have been put out of their agony with the announcement of the Pantone colour of the year.

The go-to shade for 2018 is to be Ultra Violet (or Pantone 18-3838 to be more specific).

This takes over from the rather restful Greenery shade of 2017, and marks a dramatic change of direction.

Purple is a statement colour, in whatever guise. Ultra Violet conjures images of celestial skies and opulent fabrics – think of a bruising sky after a thunderstorm or Jimi Hendrix in velvet pantaloons.

It has been a striking presence on the catwalk this year and has been filtering through to the high street for autumn winter and will continue into the new year.

Wear it solo in a top, blouse, jumper, dress or coat and it is a statement in its own right. It won't need many friends: just some neutral companions in the shape of a pair of grey or black trousers, skirt or pair of tights. A long silver necklace would add a dressy note.

If that all sounds a bit overwhelming, introduce it through a print. This won't be hard to do come spring time when shades of purple will be in full bloom in floral dresses, shirts and tops.

Poet Jenny Joseph memorably wrote in her much-loved poem Warning 'When I am an old woman I shall wear purple'.

But why wait 'til then?
