Yorkshire's Titanic Spa keeps winning awards for a reason, as MAXINE GORDON discovers on an overnight break

TITANIC Spa is shaping up as a giant in the industry having just scooped another prestigious award.

It can now claim to be the ‘Best Luxury Destination Spa’, having won top prize in the 2017 World Luxury Spa Awards.

But there is no sign of the business resting on its laurels (or in this case reclining in the sauna) and basking in glory.

The Titanic pulls in awards because it does its job really well - and then some.

Since my last visit a few years back, around half a million pounds has been spent on the place. The most obvious beneficiary of this is the glamorous new cocktail bar, which would be perfect to hang out with pre-dinner with a bunch of girlfriends.

While Titanic is a great place to visit for a day, it's even better to stay overnight (especially when you can enjoy a Cosmopolitan or Negroni as mum and me did in the trendy bar). It also means you get a chance to stay in one of its spacious apartments whose interiors are worthy of a boutique hotel.

And that's before you've even had a steam or a pummel!

Another great thing about Titanic is that there are always new treatments to try. Just out for autumn is a Pilates session for the skin, which promises to be brilliant for anyone worried about ageing. Aimed at tackling wrinkles and loss of tone, it is designed to naturally lift, remodel and redefine facial contours. Also available is the Top to Toe Organic Indulgence Treatment using completely natural, organic and ethically sourced products from North Yorkshire wellness brand Neom.

York Press:

This is a particularly good fit for Titanic, which is the UK's first eco-spa, with its own natural water source providing fresh bathing and drinking water.

During your stay, make sure you visit the heat rooms before your treatment; you don't want all those lovely oils and products to be washed away in the plunge pool.

And take your time to work your way around the different rooms. My favourite is the first one you come to, the Saunarium. It looks like a sauna with its timber seating, but it also has a steam infusion, which keeps the heat from being ferocious and allows you to linger that little bit longer.

Another great thing about using the heat rooms before a treatment is that your body is nicely warmed up and relaxed ahead of the massage. I booked in for a hot-stone massage using Elemis products. When this is on the spa menu, I find it impossible to resist. I love the mix of hot oils and deep massage - the only down side is when the hour is up. This treatment did not disappoint.

Food at the Titanic has always been good, but was even better on this visit. We worked our way through a fair few dishes on the menu over the lunch and dinner sittings, and nothing could be faulted. We enjoyed healthy salads of crab and hot smoked salmon at lunch. Appetising dishes of spicy prawn linguine, pork belly and hake with tapenade were among the mains we tried. All washed down with a crispy Sauvignon blanc from the reasonably-priced wine menu.

Breakfast is a relaxed, Continental affair, in the apartment. On check-in, you will find mini boxes of cereal, croissants, fresh fruit, and tea, coffee, OJ and milk, designed to be enjoyed at your leisure before the 10am check-out.

I rose early to have a work out in the gym and swim in the pool before breakfast. I was slightly disappointed that the outdoor hot tub wasn't open at that hour - although I had enjoyed it immensely the day before, especially when a rain cloud burst overhead as we sat in the bubbling bath with not a care in the world.

Located on the edge of Huddersfield, the spa is just an hour's drive from York (even less by direct train); the Titanic is as good as on your doorstep.

It's a world beater - and deservedly so. But don't just take my word for it.
