For people living in York, the good weather has always drawn them to the riverside and open spaces.

Playing in the parks, chilling out by the river, and even taking to the sky in hot air balloons have been pastimes enjoyed for generations.

Today, as soon as the mercury starts to rise, the outdoor cafes and packed and people congregate in Museum Gardens and Rowntree Park for an ice cream and picnic.

Campaigns on river safety have happily stopped people cooling off in the river as they used to do.

In the early 1970s, people could do more than sunbathe in Rowntree Park. They could swim too, in the open air pool. As our photograph shows, children were making the most of the hot weather by splashing around and cooling off in the outdoor pool.

The Ouse riverside was a busy place too. Instead of outdoor eating and drinking, it was lined with people sitting by the water's edge, taking in the view. There appeared to have been more boats moored in the city centre – leaving York looking more like the Riviera. Men were photographed with their tops off – some things never change!

Fishing was another pursuit to enjoy in the sunshine, as our photograph illustrates. Three young men are enjoying a tranquil moment near Lendal Bridge, waiting for their catch of the day. A couple glide past in a rowing boat in what looks like an idyllic scene.

Today, when the weather is perfect, chances are you will see a hot air balloon floating high above the city. But this has been a leisure activity enjoyed for decades. Our shot from June 1971 shows Henry VIII, a hot-air balloon, floating above the city as part of the York Gala.

More thrills and spills - and splashes, no doubt – arose from speed boat trips. Our photo from 1981 (below) shows a reporter taking instruction on how to command a speed boat on the Ouse at Poppleton.
