It was a full house to welcome the 2017 tour of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita to the Grand Opera House in York.

The enduring musical which marks its 40th anniversary next year tells the rags-to-riches story of Eva Perón, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Perón, and her rise from humble beginnings to extreme wealth and power.

Leading lady Emma Hatton excels as Eva in Bill Kenwright's touring production, revelling in the demands of the title role.

Her acting and versatile voice convey both a passion and fragility in her portrayal of Eva on her journey from illegitimate child to the First Lady and spiritual leader of the Argentinian people before cancer takes hold.

Her rendition of the iconic Don't Cry for Me Argentina was spell-binding, while big numbers like Buenos Aires were sung with admirable vigour.

My favourite, Another Suitcase In Another Hall, was beautifully sung by Sarah O'Connor as she is ousted from the role of Peron's mistress.

Gian Marco Schiaretti as Che is a confrontational narrator, whose character reflects the voice of the Argentine people. He seamlessly merges in and out of the shadows, his strong voice telling the story with clarity to carry the audience through the show.

There is more powerful singing from classically-trained Kevin Stephen-Jones, as Argentine president Juan Perón, and Oscar Balmaseda as a touring tango-singer, Magaldi, who are superbly supported by a slick ensemble and a live orchestra.

In many ways, the 1978 musical still feels current, with politics at its heart, and the lines between politics and celebrity culture merging on the world’s stage as much today as it did then.

Credit must go to Mark Howett for his stunningly effective lighting, and to Matthew Wright for his design of arches and staircases that recede and reassemble to represent presidential palaces and public squares.
