Should classics be left untouched? Or is there always room for improvement?

The team at Yorkshire Tea recently launched three new varieties, and this week thousands of people across York and the region have had free samples delivered through their door.

So, what's the verdict?

Our deputy editor Stuart Martel, something of a tea enthusiast, put them to the test....

York Press:

EVERYBODY in God’s Own Country knows that if you want a proper brew, it’s simply got to be Yorkshire Tea. Or Yorkshire Tea Gold.

One question sprang to mind when three sachets of new brews dropped through the letterbox: how do you improve on tea perfection?

Yorkshire Tea, recently named as the sixth best brand in the UK, have added Breakfast Brew, Breaktime Brew and Bedtime Brew to the pot, using the slogan “Proper brews, whatever you choose”.

The Harrogate-based firm ask: “Ever needed your cup of tea to give you a bit of something extra? Perhaps an added spring in your step in the morning? Or a cosy hug before bed?”

1) Breakfast Brew

Being firmly in the “stronger the better” tea camp, I was stirred up to try the Breakfast Brew first, drawn in by the promise it was “packed with a powerful punch”.

The inviting dark brown colour promised a builders’ brew strength, and the extra Assam in the blend ensured it delivered on that score. This new addition could challenge Yorkshire Tea Gold for a place on the shopping list.

2) Breaktime Brew

Fruit teas have never been a favourite of mine, so the Breaktime Brew - “bursting with refreshing citrus” - was sampled with a degree of tea trepidation.

The Lemsip aroma is slightly off-putting, but the taste is less overpowering. The brew is smooth to drink, and the hint of orange and lemon not too fruity for someone who prefers a more earthy cuppa.

3) Bedtime Brew

Unfortunately, the Bedtime Brew is definitely not my cup of tea, the “decaf blend with cosy herbs” being a bit more mulled wine than hug in a mug.

Try them for yourself.

The range retails at £2.29 per pack of 40.
