Autumn is the season of the switch. MAXINE GORDON reports on the new fashion essentials

AUTUMN is in the air; the days are cooler and the nights are chillier - summer has definitely sailed on.

It's time to wave goodbye to last season's clothes, and pick out some cosier pieces for October.

We visited Browns, York, to raid their rails and highlight some key looks for the coming months.

Jamie Wood, buying assistant at the Davygate store, talked us through the key trends for the new season.

Cosmopolitan chic

"This is all about tailored dressing and figure flattering clothes," says Jamie.

Casual luxe

"Mix your textures and choose separates with a luxurious feel. Go for patterned trousers with sheer light-weight knits and wear faux leather," says Jamie. Have fun by mixing designs too: go wild and invest in some animal print.

Colour coded

"Colour is the new black! Inject a bit of colour into your winter wardrobe," encourages Jamie. "People can be drawn to black, greys and nudes, but pick a dress, a statement coat or knitwear in a bold shade. You can always add a pop of colour through accessories."

Boho-cosmo

"Bohemia meets cosmopolitan city chic. Fluid lines, layers, and subdued colours are what you need here," says Jamie. Layering is a great trick for the transitional wardrobe, so think about investing in a poncho, cape or gilet. Team with skinny jeans, a white shirt and ankle boots for a relaxed urban vibe.
