CHARLOTTE Hazell's designs are the epitome of modern, country chic. Rustic tweeds sit with crisp cotton and cool linens in styles designed to turn heads.

And turning heads is just what the young designer has been doing since she left York College back in 2008,when her final-year collection featured in a competition at the Great Yorkshire Show, where she was a finalist in its Fashion Idol competition.

Since then, Charlotte has gone on to launch her own womenswear label, Charlotte Lucy, and been invited to preview her latest collection at this year's Great Yorkshire Show in July.

Charlotte, of Norton on Derwent, is expecting her first child in October, and has been working flat out to get the capsule range ready in time for its unveiling at the Fashion Pavilion in the showground on July 14.

Turning against the tide of fast, disposable fashion, Charlotte believes clothes should last, and produces just one collection a year.

She says: "The collection is full of transitional pieces with dresses that you can wear in summer and winter. Although my coats are mainly for winter, with the British weather, you can often wear them all year round."

Her designs are timeless, but often with a quirky twist. "My style is simple, clean-cut garments that are made to last and can stay in the wardrobe for years."

Key pieces for 2015 are waxed, linen macs that look great with a dress or a chunky coat that is a statement in itself, she says.

Charlotte hand-makes all pieces to order. The collection will go live on the first day of the Great Yorkshire Show and customers can buy online. Charlotte aims to turn around all sales within two weeks.

She said the Great Yorkshire Show was a fantastic opportunity to showcase her work to a wider audience. More than 130,000 visitors are expected to attend the 157th annual countryside event, which will run for three days.

Charlotte said: "It is brilliant for me. My influences are the countryside because it is where I live, and there is a rural influence in the label. It will be great exposure to people. It is the right client market. Getting people to see your work can be a real struggle for a smaller label."

Charlotte Lucy will be just one of the brands showcasing their latest work in the Fashion Pavilion.

A number of the region’s leading designers, as well as high street favourites, will also be taking part, and demonstrating their collections in a series of fashion shows.

Leeds-based designer James Steward, who studied in Hull before moving to Italy, will present his range of silk dresses for the first time in Harrogate. These will be showcased on the catwalk complimented by milliner Beth Hirst’s head-turning creations.

Popular womenswear label Phase Eight will be taking part for the first time with an array of evening dresses, and will be joining GYS fashion favourite, Hobbs, which will display its new autumn/winter collection featuring wool from Yorkshire’s Abraham Moon.

Elsewhere around the showground, there will be the usual mix of countryside attractions. More than 12,000 entries across the competitive classes form the backbone of the show, from champion bulls and sheep to rabbits, poultry and pigs.

Also popular will be the Food Hall and Cookery Theatre, featuring TV favourite Rosemary Shrager. And visitors can witness the first-ever Shetland Pony Grand National, as well as shopping opportunities and horticultural displays.

  • The Great Yorkshire Show will run at the Great Yorkshire Showground, Harrogate, from July 14-16. Tickets are available either online at greatyorkshireshow.co.uk or by telephoning 01423 541222.
