IT’S the time of year when the red Virgin hot air balloon can often be seen in the skies above York.

These striking images were taken by forklift truck driver Kev O’Donnell, 51, of Acomb, York, who was given the chance to fly above the city as a birthday present.

He said: “My favourite is the one of the River Ouse and all the bridges - the Minster is in the background and the quality of the picture is quite clear, which I’m quite impressed with.”

Taking off from Knavesmire earlier this month, Kev captured a view of the racecourse and the terraces of Southbank, of Scarcroft Primary School and the old Terry’s Chocolate Factory.

With clear skies stretching into the distance, Kev also saw the River Ouse snaking into the city past Clifton Bridge and Leeman Road, and stunning views from Fishergate towards the Minster.

A spokesperson for the balloon flights said: “With hot air balloon flights you’re at one with the wind and never can tell where you’re going to end up — you’ll start from the York Racecourse launch site, and from there the county is your oyster.”
