York is about to put fashion first for a weekend of fun events, reports MAXINE GORDON

CATWALK shows, live models in windows and the chance to meet local designers are all on the programme of the latest Fashion City York.

Now in its fourth year, FCY sets out to put the city centre firmly on style map, with a range of retailers taking part in scores of fun events.

Independent boutiques as well as big-name stores are signed up for the weekend, which kicks off on Friday, April 10.

And there is still time for businesses to get on board – bookings are still being taken for the pop-up Fashion Village which will be staged in the HSBC bank in Parliament Street on Sunday, April 12.

Angela Horner, chair of FCY, said the weekend was open to all businesses and creative organisations, pointing out that many outlets were collaborating to make an impact.

“Mulberry Hall are linking up with fashion boutique Paper Doll and hair salon Bang. There will be models, wearing clothes from Paper Doll and with hair by Bang, taking afternoon tea in the Mulberry Hall windows over the weekend. It will be a bit of theatre.”

The fun kicks off at 6pm on the Friday with a fashion show at Hobbs on Davygate and the launch of the Fashion Visual Exhibition featuring work by art and design students at The Attic, King’s Square.

From 6.30pm that evening, menswear retailer Mullen & Mullen on Petergate is hosting a suits and drinks event with Demijohn.

On Saturday, the bustling programme will include beauty demonstrations and live fashion windows at Fenwick. Over at Browns, male models will be showing off the latest collection from Jockey.

Commuter Barbers in George Hudson Street will be offering a short back and sides with guitar lessons from 3pm to 4.30pm while Waterstones in Coney Street hosts a fashion display from Thimbelina and Season’s Dress Agency.

Another collaboration takes places at the Zatchels store in Shambles, which is hooking up with Candyland and the York Chocolate Story for a fun event too.

Swarovski, St Helen’s Square, and Pure Collection, Stonegate, are offering free drinks over the weekend.

New bicycle shop Bicis Y Mas in Walmgate will be hosting a “how to look good on your bike” event, while ethical fashion boutique Maude and Tommy is offering fashion styling appointments at its Grape Lane shop which can be pre-booked by phoning 01904 675987.

On Sunday at noon, City Screen plans to show the critically-acclaimed movie Advanced Style, which follows the colourful lives of older fashionistas in New York. Part of the “Our Screen” initiative, a minimum number of tickets need to be sold for the event to go ahead; to reserve a place follow this link: ourscreen.com/film-details/161227

In a collaboration with HSBC bank on Parliament Street, a pop-up Fashion Village will take over the ground floor on Sunday from 11am to 4pm, featuring local designers Smith & Downes (famed for their Liberty-print kimonos) and local jeweller Jo Bagshaw.

Stalls are still available, priced at £25 for the day. Find out more on the FCY website: fashioncityyork.co.uk

You can also meet young designers Rebecca Carr and Greg Harper who will be hosting an open studio at their boutique and workshop on Fossgate.

Full details of the events with a helpful map of event locations are available in a new booklet available in local shops and from Browns (upstairs at the accounts kiosk). It can also be downloaded from the website. This has been possible because of a sponsorship deal with Cooper York of Clifton Moor.

Angela welcomed the packed programme. She said: “It’s very diverse with everything from fashion photography to film and live windows and lots of collaborations; it is great that HSBC bank is opening up on a Sunday to host the Fashion Village.

“We have a great number of individual stores in York, which makes the city such a special place to come shopping. Something like Fashion City York helps showcase what they do.”
