Motherwell's James McFadden has admitted that he does not want to play in the Bell's first division next season.

The 20-year-old was again watched by the Preston manager, Craig Brown, and other scouts from England yesterday as his side slumped to a home defeat by Aberdeen.

That result confirmed Motherwell as the Bank of Scotland Premierleague's bottom club and they now face an anxious wait until Friday to see if Falkirk are handed promotion.

The Scotland internationalist was in tears at the final whistle as the reality sunk in, and he was adamant that if they are relegated, he does not want to stay at Fir Park.

''I'm an ambitious man, I want to do well, and I will wait and see what happens on Friday whether the vote goes against us,'' said McFadden. ''If I'm to develop the way I want then, realistically, I don't want to play first division football.

''I'm sure the rest of the guys in the team don't actually want to play first division football. No disrespect to the first division, but it's not somewhere I want to be playing football next season.

''I want to play at a higher level than the Scottish first division, but I have not given any thought to where I would like to play because it's not up to me at this moment.

''If teams want to come and watch me then it's up to them and if they want to do anything about it then it's between the clubs.

''It's nothing to do with me. I am here to try to win football matches and we didn't win yesterday.''
