AT this time of year many of us start to think about holidays. For some it is hot, sandy beaches or mountains and wilderness, for others it is culture and antiquities or something a bit more adventurous.

Whatever your choice, holidays are great to plan and look forward to and, hopefully, give you long-lasting memories.

Kirkbymoorside Camera Club members have taken holidays as their theme for this week’s feature.

Julie Cowdy – Venetian Glasses: Venice is my all-time favourite city break. The art and architecture, as well as great photo opportunities, make it a compelling holiday destination for me. Sitting drinking a glass of wine overlooking the Grand Canal is a great way to pass the time.

David Richardson – Brecon: On holiday in the Brecon Beacons we visited this crooked church in the secluded hamlet of Cwmyoy. Apparently it was built on unstable ground and had to be shored up to make it useable. Inside it looks even weirder, but a lovely place all the same.

Barrie Tuck – Pool: This picture was taken from the hotel balcony of our hotel in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, in the Canary Islands. Just before dusk, the final rays of light illuminate the 50ft yacht in the pool.

Richard Harrison – Fort William: This exotic foliage was spotted in a very special garden created from scratch 30 years ago, in a rocky wasteland, with just hard work and imagination. It is located near Fort William on Scotland’s west coast, the Gulf Stream maintains a temperate climate throughout the year.

Katie Whiting – Colonsay Ruin: The ruins of an ancient crofters cottage long-since abandoned, now only visited by a chocolate labrador and the occasional tourist. Set in a stunning and isolated location on the isle of Colonsay off the west coast of Scotland.

Mike Ward – Amphitheatre underground: Underground at the Amphitheatre Pompeii, where 5,000 spectators gathered to witness gladiatorial combat.

Harry Kingman – Shepherds’ Huts: While on a walk from Loen, in Norway, we discovered these cosy huts where, during the summer months, the farmers tend their cattle and sheep on the high pastures.

Joyce Kingman – White Island: White Island is an active volcano off the coast of North Island, New Zealand. On a recent holiday we were fortunate to be able to make a zodiac landing on the island in perfect conditions. We were given hard hats and gas masks and a local guide took us between bubbling mud pools and hissing fumaroles to approach the open crater.
