NEXT time you’re in the York branch of Waitrose try a little eavesdropping in the aisles - because the Facebook page ‘Overheard in Waitrose’ has become an Internet hit.

Implying that Waitrose customers are slightly better-off than other supermarket shoppers, the light-hearted Facebook page describes itself as ‘A page for publishing words often heard permeating the aisles of Britain's poshest supermarket’.

With 216,000 ‘likes’, the page is growing in popularity, with recent posts including “Hugo go and find some fig chutney, we need it for your sister's cheese and wine evening” and “Luciano behave! Children these days... I blame the au pairs.”

One of the most popular posts is: “Daddy does Lego have a silent 'T', like Merlot?” which has more than 14,000 ‘likes’.

A Waitrose spokesman said: "It's nice to see people having a bit of fun."
