Danny Green’s wild eye
IF you’re lucky, you may have seen puffins during the breeding season at Bempton Cliffs or Flamborough Head, their small, stubby bodies nestled in a crevice in the rocks, their beaks a flash of colour.
You won’t have seen them swooping towards you in full flight, wings banked to catch the air currents, feet spread to serve as brakes, eyes fiercely concentrating. It takes a gifted and patient photographer to capture an image like this. Danny Green is both.
“He is perhaps one of the best natural history photographers in the UK,” says Harry Kingman, the chairman of Kirkbymoorside camera club.
The club is hosting an event early next month at which Danny will give an illustrated talk about his work.
The Long Journey North, at Helmsley Arts Centre on Thursday, November 7, will be an ‘audio-visual exploration of the Arctic and Subarctic regions of Northern Europe’.
“It’s a project that has taken him over eight years to complete, and is a collection of images showing some of the most beautiful and iconic species that can be found in this varied and pristine wilderness,” says Harry.
Leicestershire-based Danny has been photographing the natural world for more than 20 years and has won many awards. His interests take in all kinds of natural history including mammals, birds, insects and reptiles.
Like all great nature photographers, he is patient – he can sometimes spend months, if not years, working on subjects and projects.
For his Long Journey North project, he travelled to some of the most remote regions that northern Europe has to offer – from the mountains of Scotland to the boreal forests of Finland, the Arctic tundra of Iceland and the polar ice caps of Svalbard.
Places for his illustrated talk in Helmsley are limited to just 140 – so if you want to make sure you don’t miss out, book now.
Tickets are £6 in advance – which includes free entry into a draw for a signed copy of Danny’s book of the same name as his talk, ‘The Long Journey North’.
