Record recycling rates in East Yorkshire after trial
8:15am Friday 22nd June 2012 in Eco info
RECYCLING rates in East Yorkshire have hit record levels after fortnightly bin collections were tested out in the region.
Areas taking part in the trial recycled an average of 67 per cent of their waste last month, the highest figure since records started being kept ten years ago.
The scheme is seeing blue recycling bins being collected every two weeks rather than once a month, and green bins for landfill emptied on a fortnightly basis instead of every week.
The trial will now be extended to other areas, including Driffield, Bridlington and Shiptonthorpe, and John Skidmore, head of streetscene services for East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said the figures were “phenomenal”, adding: “Our residents continue to prove their enthusiasm for cutting down on the waste they are creating while increasing the amounts they are recycling.”
