Volunteer for dig at hill fort
2:38pm Friday 11th May 2012 in Eco info
LOCAL people are being given an opportunity to take part in an excavation of Boltby Scar hill fort as part of the Lime & Ice Project.
The dig will take place on week days until May 25. It is the third dig at the hill fort, which is on the south-western edge of the North York Moors, close to Sutton Bank National Park Centre.
Around one third of the hill fort’s original defences still survive, including a rampart.
However, much of the defences were levelled during the 1960s in order to incorporate the area into arable fields.
The dig will continue the work of similar excavations carried out in 2009 and 2011.
Volunteers are asked to commit a minimum of two days. Phone Nick Lishman on 01439 770657 or e-mail n.lishman@northyorkmoors- npa.gov.uk.
