Red army in bid to find squirrels

A RED army is to go on the march in North Yorkshire in search of squirrels as part of a two-month conservation project.
The Red Squirrels Northern England (RSNE) partnership is co-ordinating a team of volunteers, called the “Red Army”, who will be visiting 270 woodlands in five northern counties to discover whether they are populated by grey or red squirrels.
The two-month project will establish a baseline database against which future efforts to increase the red squirrel population will be assessed.
The monitoring programme will be repeated every two years.
The volunteers will use a series of techniques including the use of sticky pads to trap squirrel hairs, remote cameras and simply walking through woodlands counting the squirrels they see.
The results will be published in June.
