East Yorkshire recycling efforts praised

RESIDENTS in East Yorkshire have been praised for saving millions of pounds by recycling more rubbish than they throw away.

New figures have shown 54 per cent of household waste was recycled in the region last month, making East Riding of Yorkshire Council the best performing large local authority in Yorkshire.

The total was 11 per cent higher than last year and eight per cent ahead of the next-best council. City of York Council predicted it would hit 46.77 per cent this year.

In 2011, 90,000 tonnes of unrecycled waste were sent to landfill in East Yorkshire, costing the authority more than £5 million in landfill tax, and that figure would rise to £7.2 million in two years if the tonnage stayed the same.
