Awareness week to turn up heat on climate change

A WEEK of events is to be staged in York to drive home how residents can save money by cutting their carbon emissions.

Climate Week, which runs from Monday to Sunday, March 18, is a national campaign aimed at inspiring people to take action on climate change.

City of York Council and other organisations in the city will host a series of activities including a sustainable-themed market in Newgate Market.

Shoppers will be invited to enter a “saving zone” to get tips on going green in their homes, with experts on hand to offer advice, as well as finding out more about growing their own fruit and veg at a demonstration garden created by Askham Bryan College students.

Residents will also be able to sign up for free loft and cavity wall insulation through the Wrapping Up York scheme and win a Newgate Market fresh vegetable hamper.

More information is available by phoning 01904 551666 or by emailing sustainability@york.gov.uk or logging on to york.gov.uk

Coun Dave Merrett said: “Taking small steps such as growing your own food can make a big difference to household budgets, and there are more savings to be made by using fuel efficiently.”
