York's extra funding to improve air quality

EXTRA funding worth £19,500 has been given to York in a bid to improve air quality in the city.

City of York Council was awarded £68,500 from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) last April, which is being used to pay for a low emission zone feasibility study and work on reducing pollution from vehicles.

The additional money has been allocated for a voluntary Eco-Stars fleet recognition scheme, designed to encourage more people to drive vehicles which use alternative fuels and raise awareness of low-emission transport.

Businesses and bus and coach firms are all being given guidance and advice.

The scheme will be initially aimed at buses, coaches, lorries and the council’s own fleet and will be expanded later to include taxis and other large fleets of vehicles.
