York residents recycle 880 tonnes in two weeks

RESIDENTS in York recycled more than 880 tonnes of material through a kerbside collection service in the first two weeks of 2012.

Their efforts have saved the city almost £50,000 in landfill tax payments, which are due to increase in April.

Coun Dafydd Williams, City of York Council’s cabinet member for communities and neighbourhoods, said: “I’d like to thank local residents for all their hard work in recycling their Christmas waste. It really does make a significant difference, not just the overall sustainability of the city, but also to the council’s budget.”

This is a confused story.

Does it mean that xx tonnes more has been recycled during the first 2 weeks of the year than in 2010?
(That wouldn't be surpising given the weather last year)

or does it mean that, cumulatively for the financial year, York is recycling x% more than was budgeted for?

If the latter, then it is good news but the Council needs to be a bit more open with residents when thanking them for their efforts.

And does the £50,000 include the cost of collection, or not?

880 tonnes in the first two weeks of January. most of that would be because the council refused to collect over the Christmas period and there were not only two collections worth in the first week, but all of the festive items (boxes and so on) to get rid of.

perhaps more worrying is that 880 tonnes of stuff had to be recylcled, most of the things my children got for Christmas were over packaged! that needs dealing with.

after carefully sorting my paper ,plastic and cans after Xmas into green boxes the council came in an pickup with an open cage on the back and threw them all into one pile - what is the point ??
