STAFF at a York garden centre are backing a campaign to record bird sightings.
The team at Poppleton Garden Centre is offering fans of feathered friends the chance to get involved with the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds’ (RSPB) Big Garden Birdwatch, which will be held over the weekend of January 28 and 29.
The event invites people to spend an hour counting the birds who visit their garden. Last year, more than 600,000 people took part across the UK and counted more than ten million birds, with house sparrows being the most commonly seen variety.
Michael Parker, the Northfield Lane centre’s manager, said: “It is designed to help raise awareness of the RSPB and its important conservation work.”
Spotting forms can be downloaded from RSPB.org.uk and the garden centre will also be handing out free bird-spotting charts, as well as recording sightings at its own premises.
