BEST Western Monkbar Hotel has installed a waste-to-water digester to significantly reduce its waste.
The machine uses a bio-enzymatic formula to break down waste food into water, which is then filtered and disposed of through the hotel’s drains.
Monkbar Hotel director June Nelsey said the hotel was the first in the Best Western group, and the first hotel in Yorkshire, to fit the system.
She said: “As part of our green policy we have been looking at ways to reduce the volume of waste we send to landfill.
“We already compact paper and cardboard and recycle glass. This machine is a massive step forward in the disposal of food waste.
“We are very happy to be leading the excellent Best Western Green Hotel initiatives, and this will make a huge improvement to waste control.
“It is hygienic, simple to use, good for the environment, and will also contribute to financial savings on waste disposal.”
