VOLUNTEERS were today getting muddy in the name of conservation at a York park.
The 14 helpers from insurance firm Aviva were doing their bit on a project to dig and line a new pond in Rowntree Park, with the cost of materials funded through a grant from the The Two Ridings Fund to the Friends of Rowntree Park.
City of York Council’s park ranger team has worked with the Friends to plan the scheme and looked for local businesses to help, with the pond liner being provided by Clifton Moor-based firm Bradshaws Direct.
Cath Mortimer, Park Active co-ordinator for the Friends, said: “The pond will be a focus for all sorts of animals, including our resident fox family, although we’re particularly interested in providing a home suitable for the rare tansy beetle, and it will also be a special focus for local children who will be able to investigate this newly created habitat.”
