GOVERNMENT plans to lower the amount paid to owners of solar energy panels are “a sudden and unexpected blow” for a new City of York Council scheme, a cabinet member has claimed.
The Feed In Tariff (FiT), was introduced in April 2010 to reward homeowners who adapted their homes with solar panels, to sell electricity back to the National Grid at 43.3p per Kilo Watt (KW).
Following this, the council’s Solar PV scheme was set up to enable solar panels to be installed on 3,000 council-owned properties before March 2012, to help reduce tenants’ bills and has already cost the council £20,000.
As of next month though, the FiT will be reduced to 21p per KW, which Councillor Tracey Simpson-Laing, cabinet member for health, housing and adult social services at the council, said was a blow for the city

The council took a gamble and lost, the intention was obviously to trouser a load of government money from the sale of electricity rather than the more noble "reducing tenants bills" I suspect.
common sense, why should an energy company pay a panel owner 47p a unit to sell it back to another customer at 20p a unit.... never made sense when i read it in april and doesnt now, maybe someone spotted the error in their maths...
