THE digital switchover has resulted in a massive surge in the number of televisions being sent for recycling.
Yorwaste, which recycles electrical equipment, separating metal, plastic and glass, at Hessay, near York, has hit record production as people discard their old, non-digital televisions.
The site used to process about 3,000 TVs and computer monitors a week, but the digital switchover has seen this figure rise to 9,000.
Paul Sellers, Yorwaste’s recycling manager, said: “The digital switchover has had a major impact on our electrical recycling business and at times we are dealing with 1,400 sets a day.”
Yorwaste recycles 98 per cent of all televisions, monitors and other electrical equipment, such as toasters and vacuum cleaners.
