Up to 60 homes are to be built on the former British Sugar site as part of an eco-project

City of York Council will receive £275,000 of Government money to help construct an eco show home which will provide an example to local residents and school children of “green living”, as well as providing a base for sustainable construction training.

The cash will also be used to carry out studies on which green technologies would be the most useful in homes.

It is part of £1.2 million being given to support the Leeds City Region’s Urban Eco-Settlement programme, which includes York Northwest, including the British Sugar site.

Council leader Andrew Waller, who is chairman of the Leeds City Region Housing Panel, said: “Once again things are moving in York and this key project is about setting York out as a centre of excellence for a low carbon future.

“It is great news that the council’s programme of eco-housing through the city region is going to get Government funding for planning. I will now be working with the Homes and Communities Agency and British Sugar to get the investment needed to build the homes on this brownfield site.”

"Up to 60 homes" is just a drop in the ocean on this huge piece of land. Do we know what will be built on the rest of the land, and when?

I just hope something of use is built, not just housing. however something needs to be done with the site as leaving it as it is cannot be a serious option.

Easy access to the ring road, and a site that is used to having HGV's in and out, a good site for industry.

however it will turn into another Terry's with residents fighting for it to stay as quiet as it is now. work should have started as soon as the plant closed so that people don't get used to the quiet and forget how noisy the site actually was.

As it stands there are not many houses around the site. There is a little close at the very top of millfield lane (does anyone know what the weird house with the boarded up windows is used for?) And the Poppleton park estate, but those houses are on a business park and right next to a rail track so surely cant complain too much about noise.

Thats great!!! Any requests like, do you want granite or steel tops in the kitchen? Would you prefer gold or platinum fittings in the bathroom and perhaps most importantly would you prefer the swimming pool to be in the basement or the back garden?

Don't worry. I'll pay. No no, it's fine. Really, I insist.

Yorkiegirl1978 is fine!Well off mouthpeices from Poppleton and Mystic Meg should get together in Bigots United.Thing is though, these will not be Council Houses as the conservatives started the ball rolling when it came to getting rid of them years ago,so she will have to find a mortgage to get one--and then, like you,she will be able to have which glittering kitchen surfaces she wants!Nothing like a bit of selfish bitterness from the better off is there?

Absolutely nothing against council houses but when houses are being offered and refused for not being good enough it becomes a bit of a joke. Hence the joke reply.

Not being one to brag-but you will remember me sayingthis would happen the week that british sugar announced it was about to close down. Homes without jobs doesnt work and just creates ghettos of unemployed. Will there be shops, a doctors/clinic and playground/park facilities to assist these new residents quality of living?

Easy access to the ring road ....Hmmm! The government has been sensibly persuaded that their new eco townships should be built on brownfield sites with access to all transport modes, rather than in greenfield areas. York NW may have A1237 links, but there will be an emphasis on promoting alternative travel choices.

If the council are interested in providing "affordable" housing to help ease the housing shortage these suggested types will not fill the bill. They will be far too expensive for average families wishing to get onto the housing ladder.
The powers that be should be looking at ways of reducing building costs not fancy gimmicks, they should produce designs which are fairly basic which can be improved and added to as time goes on and people's finances improve. I am sure that many aspects of building and planning regulation could be drastically cut back to reduce costs but still provide
acceptable housing for the majority of people without the frills which at the end of the day are not really necessary for comfortable living.

Probably not. I heard they were thinking of building a maximum security prison on the rest of the site :¬)

I'm too rich for a council house. And too poor for anything bigger than a 2 beds terraced house on a council estate, with neighbours who
have the same house as me for a fraction of the cost. Oh the joy of being stuck in the middle!
