Fulford residents get a say on air quality

THE results of a public survey of how much of their community residents in an area of York want to see covered by an environmental plan will be revealed next month.

City of York Council was required to devise a new Air Quality Management Area after air pollution levels in the Main Street area of Fulford rose above the Government’s minimum standard.

This has to cover the area around the junction of Main Street and Heslington Lane, but residents have been given the chance to extend its reach by sharing their views through a public consultation exercise, which came to an end last Friday.

They were presented with three options relating to the scheme.

Fulford councillor Keith Aspden said: “We need to take action, but it is important that local people and businesses are consulted on any possible measures which may be taken. Fulford’s conservation area will mean there is limited scope for any fundamental changes to the road layout, so we will have to think very carefully about what can be done to cut down on traffic, such as cycling storage, road signage and measures to deal with heavy goods vehicles.

“I would urge residents to look carefully at the proposals, and continue to let the council know their views.”
