Day 12: June 25 - Crianlarich to Fort Augustus

A marvellous memorial to our armed forces. When you think your in pain on a bike ride it makes you think about what these people do and your minor suffering is nothing in comparison. Woke up to the sound of rain on the window. At least it will get rid of the midges, or so we thought – no chance! We went outdoors and were attacked by swarms of these insects. Advised that travelling at 14.45 mph was just too quick for them so we sped off down the road – it’s going to be a long day.

Good thing about wearing sunglasses you can’t see the rain, you can just feel it. Some of the team were wearing some very smart “water protectors” called rain legs. Made them look like a bunch of pirates.

Progressed slowly towards Glencoe, stopped for coffee and the rain subsided. Fish & Chip lunch at Fort William and then as the weather got better cycled down towards Fort Augustus at the edge of Loch Ness for a lovely meal at the Lovat Hotel.

Only two days to go, we’ve done over 870 miles but tomorrow is the big day, 100 mile climb. The smiles at dinner slowly disappeared as we realised what Friday would bring. Let’s hope the rain has gone for good.
