Ten days after completing the 2009 Great North Run and I finally get chance to put fingers to keyboard and update you post-race and to also let you know about some events which are coming up this year and next.
Sunday 20th September saw over 54,000 runners take to the streets of Newcastle and complete a course of 13.1 miles in what was probably the warmest day I have experienced for that event. Finishing in 2:00:53 hrs I was a little disappointed not to get under the 2 hour mark but pleased that I had managed to complete the course without stopping. After all my training leading up to the race had involved very few 6 mile runs and numerous 3 milers with backpack, not the best preparation. All in all a good day was had, not just by me but also by my two eldest daughters aged 7 and 5 who took part in the Mini Great North Run the day before. A 1 mile run around the Quayside and they loved it, almost as much as sleeping in the tent on the Saturday night.
So with a 25% improvement target for the 2010 race (sub 1hr 30) I can continue with my fitness regime for the remainder of the year safe in the knowledge that I have no more races to attend in 2009.
On the events side of things, I will be organising a Santa's Grotto this year in York and am currently in talks with a suitable venue. After recognising that there was relative lack of such attractions in the City I thought that providing a cost-effective alternative to the established Grotto's and at the same time raising money for Bowel Cancer UK would be a good idea and I hope to announce proper details very shortly. Quite a few bits planned for 2010, especially in the holidays which I will update you on when I receive confirmations. I suppose the last thing to do is remind you that the Raffle draw will be held at York City FC on Saturday 10th October at 7:00pm. If you haven't yet bought your ticket it's not too late, just email me or pop in to the Bay Horse on Blossom St, Premier Sports on Goodramgate or The Fox on Holgate Road and purchase yours there.
