Friends run in aid of cancer charities

Two friends from North Yorkshire will be marking the start of the Olympics by running from York to Scarborough in aid of cancer charities.

John Hall, 34, of York, and Christian Machen, 33, of Scarborough, will set off from York on July 27, stopping overnight in Malton to rest and refuel, before completing their 42-mile challenge to arrive in Scarborough the next day.

John is raising funds for York Against Cancer, a charity close to his heart following the death of his mother three years ago, and Christian is fundraising for St Catherine’s Hospice in Scarborough.

John said: “Throughout my mum’s 18-month battle with lung cancer she was supported by many different cancer charities that helped to make a very difficult time a little bit easier. Since my mum’s death I have been taking part in numerous events to raise money for cancer charities. Unfortunately I am sure we all know of someone who is currently battling with this awful disease or have sadly lost their fight.

Christian said: “Sadly doing this run can’t bring loved ones back but it will support great charities that do fantastic work for our community.”
