A team of York workers have helped to raise £10,000 for three charities.
The staff, at Yorkon Limited in Huntington, raised £5,000 by taking part in last year’s York Dragon Boat Race. The firm’s parent company, The Shepherd Building Group, then matched the amount raised.
The money was split between the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at York Hospital, Meningitis UK and York Against Cancer.
The team came fifth out of 36 teams and won two prizes; £100 for the team who collected the most sponsorship and another £100 for the individual who collected the most sponsorship.
Beverley Eastwood, of Yorkon, said: “We originally chose to raise money for the ICU at York Hospital and Meningitis UK, in memory of our colleague Paul Rhodes who died from meningitis in January 2007 and was given outstanding care by staff in the ICU.
“We were further inspired last year during cheque presentations when we met two members of staff from York Hospital’s ICU and also Claire and Stefan who were introduced to us by Meningitis UK.
“The couple had sadly lost their baby daughter to the illness and have since become great supporters of the Meningitis UK work.”
Christine Morris, Matron for Critical Care, said: “Once again we are extremely pleased that the Yorkon team thought of York Critical Care Services and wish to remain associated with the department and the funds will be put to good use. It is testament to the esteem they held their colleague Paul in.”
