A RETIRED York vicar and her husband have reached Scotland in their sponsored walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats.

The Reverend Nancy Eckersley, 60, former vicar of Heslington, and her husband John, 68, said the Scottish border represented quite a milestone, meaning they had completed almost two-thirds of their 1,280-mile trek.

The couple set off from the Cornish headland at the beginning of April in a bid to raise £45,000 for Christian Aid.

They need £10,000 in donations after the European Commission agreed to match-fund that amount with an extra £35,000 to help pay for clean water supplies and farming improvements in Sierra Leone.

“We have had a terrific reception in Northumberland and have spoken with many people and quite a number now seem to be following us on the website (www.johneckersley.wordpress.com), ” said Nancy.

“Our appeal has now topped £8,000.”
