VOLUNTEER soldiers will take part in a raft race in York as part of a 23-day marathon to raise money for five charities, including Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association.

Members of the 72 Engineer Regiment (Volunteers) set off from Baltic Square in Gateshead on Saturday to march more than 560 miles round the boundary of 15 (North East) Brigade, which includes North and East Yorkshire.

En route they will take time out to join in several community events, meet the casts of the TV soaps Emmerdale and Coronation Street and take part in the York raft race.

They will be joined by other Territorial Army units and will conclude their marathon by running in the Great North Run. The other three charities to benefit are ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Great North Air Ambulance.
