A GROUP of York Christians are helping to build a safe house for orphans in Cambodia.
Miriam Swaffield, David Magill and Dr Ben Sinclair, who all worship at St Michael le Belfrey Church, are travelling to Poipet this month with ten friends and colleagues to work with the Cambodian Hope Organisation (CHO).
The CHO is creating a safe haven for orphans at Poipet to prevent homeless young children being bought and sold as sex slaves and to combat Aids. Poipet has been described as “the epicentre of the Asian Aids epidemic”.
York Handmade Brick Company, based at Alne, near Easingwold, is helping to sponsor a safe house.
David Armitage, chairman of York Handmade, said: “The situation is absolutely horrifying, with children as young as five at risk from trafficking and Aids.
“So, when Miriam said she and her friends were helping a build at safe house for orphans at Poipet, I was very happy to sponsor them.
“They will be making their own bricks, with sand, gravel and cement, so they will also be handmade bricks, but made in Cambodia, rather than York.”
It is a five-year project, featuring 12 houses, including the one which York Handmade has helped to sponsor.
Each house will hold 12 children.
