Fun day raises money for St James’s Hospital

A WOMAN who has fought against ovarian cancer is continuing to fight to raise funds for the hospital which treated her.

Jean Gratton, of Main Road, Burn, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in June of last year and tests found it had also spread to her pelvis.

But after a hysterectomy and chemotherapy treatment at St James’s Hospital in Leeds, Jean was given the all-clear earlier in the year.

Last Saturday, Mrs Gratton held a fun day at her home for villagers featuring food, games and stalls and raised more than £600.

She also plans to walk a section of the Cleveland Way from Saltburn to Filey with friends to raise funds for the hospital’s research department.

Jean said: “It’s one of the killers ovarian cancer. I was on chemotherapy from August to November every three weeks and I would not wish that on anybody. The very first time I went in it took about three hours, I had an allergic reaction and I thought I was dying.

But Jimmy’s is a beautiful hospital and I was very well-cared for. I go for another check up there this month and I have a Macmillan Nurse.

“There’s a 50/50 chance it will come back but you have to be positive.”

Mrs Gratton said a lot of fundraising is done for breast cancer but not so much for ovarian cancer which is why she wanted to give money for research into the disease and why she held the Burn Fun Day.

She said: “It went really well, everybody really enjoyed it.

“We had a bit of rain, but nobody bothered so I’m pleased.”
