Millthorpe School pupils raise money for Haitian earthquake victims

A group of Year 9 students at Millthorpe School in York organised a talent show to raise money for the victims of the Haitian earthquake.

Sophie Soanes, Faith Goodall, and Paige Cuthbertson held auditions, arrange publicity, lighting, sound and seating plans for the event.

To raise awareness of the extent of the devastation in Haiti, the students showed a short film they made using news footage from the aftermath of the earthquake.

More than 400 people attended the event, which featured a range of acts from children in Years 7, 8 and 9. In total, the students raised almost £200 for the appeal.

Steve Smith, executive head teacher, said: “The event showcased some of the wonderful talent at Millthorpe School but, more importantly, behind the scenes, the commitment and organisation involved demonstrated just how resourceful and responsible our students can be.”
