A FAMILY is asking people to put their best foot forward and take on the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge.
Rob and Kath Aveyard have been raising money since May last year in memory of their 11-year-old daughter, Bryony, who died of a brain haemorrhage in October, 2008.
They initially set themselves a target of raising £55,000 in 12 months for the charity Operation Wellchild.
But they have smashed that figure, having already raised £62,000, so have upped the target to £110,000.
In the last few months of the challenge they are hoping to get as many people as possible to take on the challenge of climbing Yorkshire’s three highest peaks – Pen-y-ghent (694m), Whernside at (736m) and Ingleborough at (723m) – in a day. The total distance is just short of 25 miles and most people should be able to complete the course in between eight and 11 hours.
Kath, of Woodside Avenue in Burnholme, York, said: “We’ve gone for May 1 as the weather should be better and we’re hoping a couple of hundred people will take part.”
She said the idea for the walk came from brothers Matthew and Daniel Gath, family friends, who suggested the challenge when the Aveyards first started fundraising.
Local firms have now come on board to help the event run smoothly with Nestlé providing refreshments for the walkers.
The circular walk will begin at the Holme Farm camp site at Horton in Ribblesdale To register for the walk, email kath.aveyard@tiscali.co.uk for a registration form, or phone her on 01904 422853.
Alternatively, visit wellchild.org.uk/Events-UKChallenges and download the Three Peaks form.
Everyone taking part is asked to raise at least £25 in sponsorship.
