Huntington Community Primary School pupils raise £501.96 for Haiti appeal

CHILDREN who took the lead in running their own charity day at a York school have raised more than £500 for the Haiti earthquake appeal.

The Press reported on Wednesday how the 396 pupils at Huntington Community Primary School took part in event, which included paying 50p to attend school without uniform, plus games, competitions and stalls.

The school has now revealed that a total of £501.96 was raised for the appeal.

Head teacher Ann McKeown said: “From a very small idea initially, the event grew and involved all the children in school.

“It was a fun day, but with a serious purpose, and the effort the children put into the day and the thought that they showed for others who are less fortunate than themselves made me feel very proud. They did a great job.

“I would like to say thank-you to all the families of the children involved, who supported the children in preparing and running the day.

“The children were involved in the initial idea and planning of the day, the managing and running of the event, and in counting and banking the money.

“They have done the whole project themselves.”
