Cricket-mad Tom Rich bowled over by African challenge

THIS cricket-loving student is heading off to Africa to teach youngsters the finer points of the game.

Tom Rich, a BTEC Sport student at Selby College, is going to Uganda next month as part of the Cricket Without Boundaries programme, which aims to promote awareness of AIDS and HIV through the sport.

The 18-year-old from the village of Hambleton will spend two-and-a-half weeks working with youngsters who have been diagnosed with AIDS or HIV, teaching them how to play cricket and encouraging them to work together and take part in the games.

Tom currently coaches cricket at a number of local primary schools, where his actions are helping him progress with his college course, but he admits that Uganda will be a unique experience.

He said: “I’m really excited and can’t wait to get out there, but I know it’ll be a real eye-opener and very different from coaching youngsters in North Yorkshire.

“This is something I’ve always wanted to do, I always wanted to go somewhere like Uganda where I could make a difference. Eventually I’d like to coach youngsters full- time and travel the world while doing it.”

Tom’s only problem now is raising the £1,500 needed for him to go on the trip – £750 for the charity and £750 for flights. However, Selby College has helped out with sponsorship of £350 and the student union has also donated £350.

Joseph Bijster, president of union, said: “I think this is a fantastic opportunity for Tom. The student union is pleased to help and I think this is something we need to get involved in more often. I hope he has a wonderful time."
