Coldstream Guards to pass through York during 425-mile march

8:38am Thursday 14th January 2010

SOLDIERS from the Coldstream Guards will be arriving in York tomorrow as part of 425-mile march from Scotland to London to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund.

The troops were following the route followed by General Monck in 1660 to restore Charles II to power. In return, he was given a dukedom and his army became known as the Coldstream Guards – today the oldest regiment of the British Army.

The marchers were joined by mascot Baxterbear for a gruelling section of the march across the North York Moors.

The soldiers are aiming to march through York between 9.30am and 10am.
