Coldstream Guards to pass through York during 425-mile march in aid of Army Benevolent Fund

SOLDIERS from the Coldstream Guards will be arriving in York tomorrow as part of 425-mile march from Scotland to London to raise money for the Army Benevolent Fund.

The troops were following the route followed by General Monck in 1660 to restore Charles II to power. In return, he was given a dukedom and his army became known as the Coldstream Guards – today the oldest regiment of the British Army.

The marchers were joined by mascot Baxterbear for a gruelling section of the march across the North York Moors.

The soldiers are aiming to march through York between 9.30am and 10am.

Big respect to the armed forces!Hope they make alot of money!
And hope they won't be any idiots protesting any where near them!

The new cream coloured body armour shown in the picture is ruddy useless - unless it's American, where their constitution allows them to "arm bears."

Well done men!

A spectacular effort of course. However, although the Coldstreams are undoubtedly the oldest Guards regiment on the UK establishment, the Royal Scots (1st Foot) beat them by 17 years ... or has that one been disbanded/absorbed?

The Royal Scots were "merged" in 2006 to form The Royal Regt of Scotland...

9.00am - they had a 10 min break on the footpath just after Huntington School, I could see them from my office window nearby. Look out for the small teddies on their backpacks.
Well done lads!

Well done to all the marchers, superb effort! Saw the big ted and the little ones on the soldiers' backs. What's the story on the tartan patch?

Laxenburgerbob asked about Baxterbear's tartan patch. The shoulder patch, and the torn ear, originate from injuries sustained during World War II when he and Pilot Baxter were shot down over the jungles of Burma whilst flying reconnaissance for the Army. His story can be read on baxterbear.com

Good luck to the soldiers. Baxterbear is helping with the fundraising. I bought a bear for £10 on www.baxterbear.com and £4 goes to the Army Benevolent Fund. Thanks Baxterbear!
