TREAT yourself to a posh afternoon tea and raise money for a new breast cancer charity in York.

That's the tempting invite from Breast Friends York which set up last year to support women in the city with the disease.

They have joined forces with Gray's Court at Chapter House, in the shadow of the Minster, to host an afternoon tea on Sunday, March 22 from 2pm-4pm.

Tickets cost £18.50 per person and will include a selection of dainty sandwiches, homemade scone with jam and cream and homemade desserts as well as a pot of loose-leaf tea.

A raffle will also take place, including a prize of a night B&B at The Chequers Inn, Bilton-in-Ainsty.

Breast Friends York was set up last year by Rachel Bruce and Zoe Bounds, two York mums who have fought the disease. The charity will get a share of the ticket price from the afternoon tea to boost is coffers.

Rachel said they needed funds for refreshments at their support group meetings. "Coffee and cake are important parts of our ethos!" she said.

They also needed money for publicity materials, including posters for events and banners to help raise awareness of the group, and to book speakers and a venue for a lingerie evening. Rachel said: "It can be very daunting going in to shops asking for help to buy bras after surgery."

The charity runs two meetings every month, one in the evening - on the second Thursday of the month from 7pm-9pm at the Pig and Pastry, Bishopthorpe Road; the other during the day on the last Thursday of the month, from 10am-noon at Me & Mrs Fisher, Lord Mayor's Walk.

The charity has a Facebook page and private chat group, Breast Friends York, and a website: Yorkbreastfriends.org.
