KIND-hearted children at a York primary school have worked together to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

The children of Carr Junior School's year six class, 6J, voted to raise money for Dementia UK after a pupil explained how the condition had affected the life of someone they knew.

Children held a very popular cake sale, a bric-a-brac sale and a competition to guess the number of sweets in a jar, which was finally won by a student in year five.

Wendy Bradshaw, a higher level teaching assistant, said the school was very grateful for the support of parents. She said: "Thanks to the hard work and dedication of 6J pupils and the support of parents and staff we have achieved the amazing total of £353.79."

The pupils organised and publicised the fundraiser themselves as part of the Archbishop of York leadership scheme which encourages children to make changes in their community and become young leaders.
