A JAMES Bond ball at the Royal York Hotel is set to raise funds in memory of two young York men who died of bone cancer.

The 007 charity ball on Saturday will feature a grand auction, with prizes including the playing cards used by Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and a DVD of For Your Eyes Only, signed by former Bond star Sir Roger Moore.

The event is being organised by the Acomb-based Guy Francis Bone Cancer Research Fund.

Organiser Ros Francis, from Wheldrake, says it will be in memory of her son Guy, who was diagnosed with Osteosarcoma, the most common form of bone cancer, at the age of 17 and Nick Bojas, who was born in Harrogate and graduated from the University of York, and was diagnosed with another form of bone cancer, Ewing’s Sarcoma, when he was 20.

"They met when receiving treatment at St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds," she said. "Sadly, neither young men beat the disease but they did an amazing amount of work in raising funds for vital research and promoting awareness."

She said guests were in for a 'fantastic evening of fun and friendship', with BBC Radio York presenter Elly Fiorentini acting as auctioneer. As well as the playing cards and DVD, people could bid for an Aston Martin & Ariel Atom Driving Experience at Elvington Airfield.

"People and businesses have been so generous and we are sure there will be something to tempt everyone," she said.

“Apart from the 3-course meal with pre-dinner cocktails, we have music by the popular local band, the Mojos; MissDeal’s Fun Casino with roulette, black jack & poker tables and a chance to have a photograph taken with Bond props, by York’s G & T Photography."

*A few tickets are left, costing £45 each, which can be purchased from the Guy Francis Bone Cancer Research Fund by calling 01904 799151 or e-mailing info@gfbonecancer.org.uk
