STUDENTS have York College have put on a glittering gala dinner to raise hundreds of pounds for charity.

The Ashfields training restaurant played host to a private dinner for 100 people held in the college's atrium in aid of Martin House Children's Hospice at Boston Spa, and BBC Radio York's Good Night's Sleep Appeal.

The dinner raised more than £1,600, and students who staged the dinner have been praised for their professionalism and hard work.

Martin House community fundraiser Alison Wragg said: "The dinner sold out within a couple of days which is a marvellous achievement. We are very grateful for the support that we continue to receive in our efforts to hit our £200,000 fundraising target by the end of September. Thank you to everyone who has supported Martin House and the appeal so far."

It was the second dinner the college has staged for Martin House, and tutor Rianne Hughes said: "Following their success we wanted to attempt something that has never been done before and being able to provide catering on such a large scale allows our students to gain a taste for the corporate event side of the industry adds another dimension to their employability skills."
