CYCLISTS were all heart as they tackled two routes on a sportive ride around North Yorkshire hills to raise money for charity.

More than 300 riders including one from Poland completed the circular trips from York and back again on behalf of the British Heart Foundation.

Some were completing their first ever major cycle ride and some were part of club groups.

One rider was so impressed with the organisation of the Heart of England sportive that after completing the shorter 22-mile route, he immediately did the longer 40-mile one as well.

As well as raising money, the ride also helped the charity achieve one of its aims – encouraging more people to cycle.

Sharon Oakley, BHF fundraising manager, said: “Being active is obviously very good for your heart.

“They had a really good day.

“Everyone I saw crossing the finishing line was smiling and happy.”

Some had signed up three or four months earlier and trained for the day, others joined on the day itself.

Organisers hope that the day has raised £15,000 but the actual figure won’t be known for some time.
